The Public Works Department (PWD) have secured funding for the waste management facility, landfill site and incinerator. The facility is planned to replace the current landfill site at Eliza Cove. While initial plans for the facility were expected to cost around 6 million pounds, it is likely the final bill will likely be more than double this original figure. The PWD cite the pandemic and the increase in the prices of materials such as steel as the main reason behind the cost increase.
The agreed upon undisclosed new figure was approved in the last Executive Council, and now work can begin on the detailed design phase. The British Ministry of Defence will also contribute funds and support the project. The PWD hope that the detailed phase can be completed within the next three to four months, at which point construction can then begin soon after.
