Investigating Drying Lands in the Falklands

Scientific predictions from the Falklands suggest that due to rising global temperatures, the country could be at risk of major increased soil erosion.

Only last week, worrying footage was posted on social media showing Goose Green’s Laguna Isla pond has dried out for the second year in a row.

When at full capacity, the pond holds 1.5 million tonnes of water, an amount that could supply Stanley for 400 days.

Local scientists are warning that a lack of water in primarily agricultural areas such as Camp, could have a devastating long-term impact, rending some areas of land unsuitable for grazing or for local wildlife to build habitats.
