Old legislation causes electric bike confusion

With a focus on renewable energies and a drive towards electric vehicles, it seems a natural step that people would want to start using electric bicycles.

However the 1948 Road Traffic Ordinance technically classes these bikes as motor vehicles, meaning extra costs such as tax and insurance come with using them.

MLA Roger Spink has called the wording of the legislation a “frustration” and “way out of date”, but also confirmed that the Falkland Islands Government is hoping to find a “quick and easy fix” in the new year.
