Disability and transgender identities have been added to the list of characteristics that will be protected by hate crime and hate speech laws following recently approved amendments. The criminal law amendment bill aims to reform hate speech law by combining the previous twelve separate offences into three. A select committee to publicly discuss the amendment bill was held earlier this week within which MLA’s commended the bill for combining aspects of both England and Wales and Scottish law.
