Stanley Receives City Status

The Falkland Islands bid for Stanley to be named a city has been successful, making the Islands the first Overseas Territory to win city status. Eight new cities were chosen as part of the Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours Competition, including Wrexham in Wales, Dunfermline in Scotland and Douglas in the Isle of Man.

Applicants had to highlight royal links, cultural heritage and how a distinct local identity meant they deserved to be awarded city status – the Falklands application included details of special events such as the Queen’s Birthday Parade, Peat Cutting Monday and the annual Boxing Day Races.
