Falkland Islands Government has closed the second loligo fishing season because of concerns over low squid biomass.

The Fisheries Department says the decision follows analysis of the catch data after fishing resumed from a two-week pause, along with two days of exploratory fishing.

It says the closure is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting the long-term sustainability of the fishery, with work already underway on measures ahead of the 2027 seasons.

It is the fourth consecutive year the second season has experienced disruption, with fishing companies saying they have been warning about potential problems for a number of years.
