A report into the social and economic impacts of the Navitas Sea Lion project has been released. The report, put together by Hatch, sets out the positives and negatives that could come if the project is green-lit. At a public meeting on Thursday, representatives from Hatch, Navitas and the Falkland Islands Government detailed their plans to members of the community and responded to questions. Some of the concerns raised included biosecurity and potential pressures on health and education services. Navitas and FIG both said plans were being made to alleviate problems that could arise.
Issues were also raised around the need for additional housing when there is already a significant shortage in the market. Navitas though have plans to avoid antagonising this further if they do go ahead with bringing people to the Islands from overseas. We spoke to MLA Teslyn Barkman to hear how FIG is preparing for this issue.
