Bird flu has been confirmed in the elephant and Fur Seal populations in South Georgia. Brown skewers, kelp gulls and Antarctic terns have also been suffering from the highly pathogenic virus. This is the first time the virus has been confirmed in mammals in sub-Antarctica, after bird flu was first detected in South Georgia in late 2023.
