Regulations Underway to Allow Gold Prospecting in the Falklands

The Falklands Islands’ Government’s Department of Mineral Resources is looking to introduce new regulations for gold prospecting and exploration, as they have received new commercial interest in gold mining in the islands.

There has been some gold prospecting in the Falklands in the past, but in part due to outdated legislation, this could be the first time in over ten years that any exploration could take place.

The consultation and draft regulations that could allow for gold prospecting have been published, and are now available on the Mineral Resources department’s website. The public have the opportunity to respond to the proposals before the 18th February. The department expects the new regulations to be in place by the end of the first half of 2022.
